Butterfly Houses
(Hibernating Boxes)
These decorative butterfly houses will be an attactive addition to any garden. There is a lot of
discussion about whether or not butterfly houses are effectively used by butterflies. The truth is
sometimes they are and sometimes they are not. What people purchase for their gardens should be referred
to as a "hibernating box". They are meant as places for certain species of butterflies to overwinter
in. These may not help, but they certainly will not hurt.
If butterflies use them, it would not be until the fall season. It should be placed in a woody section of your garden
if at all possible.
It will help considerably if you develop a butterfly friendly environment that will
attact butterflies. If you need some ideas about building a garden, visit our page on how to build a butterfly garden.
A piece of bark should be placed in the butterfly house. If the butterflies are
impressed with the environment, they will enter the house and lay their eggs in the bark. At the very least
these are very attractive and are great conversation pieces.
